My Quick Opinion:

ZeroWater filters are designed primarily to remove total dissolved solids (TDS) like minerals, salts, and metals from water. Their filters use ion exchange technology which traps ions but allows water molecules to pass through.

While ZeroWater claims their filters can reduce some microplastics, they are not specifically designed or marketed as microplastic filters. Their pore size of 5-15 nanometers is larger than many microplastic particles, which range from 1 nanometer to 5 millimeters in size.

Studies have tested the ability of ZeroWater filters to remove microplastics with mixed results:

One 2018 study found ZeroWater pitchers did not remove microplastics above a size of 180 microns from tap or bottled water. Microplastics below this size passed through.

However, a 2021 independent lab test indicated a ZeroWater filter removed an average of 23% of microplastic particles above 180 microns from tap water.

Research is limited and pore size alone does not determine microplastic removal ability, which depends on properties like plastic type, shape and surface charge.

In conclusion, while ZeroWater filters may provide some incidental microplastic reduction, their primary purpose and design is TDS removal. More specialized filters with nominal pore sizes closer to microplastic sizes would be required for reliable and high microplastic removal claims. Further research is still needed to fully understand their effectiveness. ZeroWater filters alone cannot be relied upon as a comprehensive microplastic solution.
